Caring for Your Opinel Knife

A little maintenance goes a long way. Clean the blade with warm soapy water after use and dry thoroughly to prevent rust, avoiding prolonged soaking. Sharpen regularly with a whetstone to keep the edge performing well, and store the knife in its sheath, away from moisture, when not in use. A light coat of food-safe mineral oil on the blade helps guard against corrosion, while an occasional wood conditioner treatment keeps the handle from drying out or cracking.

ABOUT OPINEL:

Victor-Amédée Opinel who was a peddler, learnt how to forge nails during his travels. He set up his first blacksmith workshop in Gevoudaz, a hamlet part of Albiez-le-Vieux, near Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. His son Daniel later worked alongside his father and grew to became a renowned “edgetool maker”(maker of sharp tools) among farmers who came from afar to buy his billhooks or sickles...

Fast forward to the new millenium and the Opinel pocket knife is recognised as one of the 999 most successful designs of all times by a jury of international designers in the beautiful three-volume set of the "Phaidon Design Classics"
