Foraging Tools

Foraging is fun, exciting and cheap! It's a great hobby to enjoy as a family or with a fellow passionate forager! One of the most frugal hobbies you can enjoy. It is essentially free to visit parks, nature trails, or your backyard (or a friend’s!).

You’ll get outside regularly and eat highly nutrient-dense wild edible food. (It is essential to make yourself familiar with foods before consuming them.)

Foraging can be non edible - think flower arrangements, pressed flowers and dried flower arrangements.

Key items include protective clothing, a cutting tool, a basket or bag to carry your harvest, and field guides to properly identify plants and mushrooms. Sometimes you don’t even need all of these, but generally speaking, you’ll need them on most short outings. You’ll need a more comprehensive set for a longer, more remote outing.

  • Never eat a plant you haven’t properly identified or you wouldn’t risk your life on.
  • Only harvest what you will use.
  • Mindfully harvest plants that are not abundant and may be at risk.
  • Harvest so that no one would know where you’ve been. be mindful of natural habitats etc (native plants may be off limits)
  • Never harvest where someone has sprayed, places which are commonly sprayed or have high pollution. Railroad tracks, under power lines, busy roadsides, city parks, etc.
